Many years ago, I signed up for a summer Bible study at my church. About a week before it began, the leader called and asked if I would be a discussion leader for a small group. I remember thinking, “This’ll be a piece of cake!” Never mind that at this point, I had never led a group.
Before I knew it, the first day of class had arrived. I suddenly had 10 ladies sitting in a circle staring at me. All I could think was, “What have I gotten myself into?” At this point, I had no training to be a group leader and I was overwhelmed.
Trial by fire, God got me through that first study group. And since then, I’ve led many groups. But as each new group began, I still encountered those same doubts. I would have been far more confident and able to concentrate on leading the study if I had been given more training!
Yet despite my fears, God has always been faithful to equip and enable me to do what He had called me to do. He even eventually called me to be the lead teacher for several years!
Between my personal experience and what I have gleaned from other seasoned leaders, I’ve learned a few things that can help groups flow smoothly and be successful. In hindsight, I was surprised to see the very elements that make a group successful, have nothing to do with MY Bible knowledge. Among other things, a successful group is filled with people that want to learn God’s Word and share what they learn with each other. They want to get to know each other and feel comfortable sharing their struggles with their group. As a leader, I just needed to be open and honest and encourage them in that pursuit.
Over the summer, Tara asked me if I would be willing to lead a workshop that would equip women to lead Bible study in their communities. She wanted to take away the insecurity and fear of inadequacy that can come with leading a Bible study.
In appreciation of what God has taught me throughout the years, I can’t wait to share what I have learned! If you sense God nudging you to lead a study this fall, but feel overwhelmed, ignorant, inferior or unworthy, this workshop is for you!
These are natural feelings when God calls us to step out of our comfort zone and do something new for Him.

- Strategies to help you gain confidence in God’s call
- Ways to become more comfortable in your role as group leader.
