“Now [the Bereans] … received the message [of salvation through faith in Christ] with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” Acts 17:11 (AMP)
Have you ever heard a sermon or teaching that sounded too good to be true? Or have you heard someone who quoted a verse to prove their point and you wondered if that was what it really said? Or maybe you were reading the Bible in your quiet time and something convicted you, but you wondered if you were reading the passage correctly…
In my experience, many people assume that they could never get the same insights from Scripture that a pastor or Bible teacher finds. But the truth is, all believers have the same Guide to studying God’s Word—the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit will lead you as you ask the Lord to help you see the truth of what He is saying.
Jesus promised His followers, “But when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak his own words, but he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is to come. The Spirit of Truth will bring glory to Me, because he will take what I have to say and tell it to you. All that the Father has is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take what I have to say and tell it to you.” (John 16:13-15 NLT)
This a promise for all believers to claim! Our feelings can be all over the place and make us doubt God’s Word. However, when we look at Scripture in an organized way, we can confirm that we are hearing correctly and have confidence that it is God speaking through His Word.
One popular way to study God’s Word is called Inductive Study. This is simply a method that uses a 3-step approach.
• Observation: What does the passage say?
• Interpretation: What does the passage mean?
• Application: What does the passage mean to me?
Working through a passage with a simple guide and some encouragement does wonders to give you confidence in your personal study of God’s Word.
This summer, KGM will be offering workshops to equip and encourage women in their faith walk.
The first of these workshops is “Studying God’s Word with Confidence.” It’s coming up soon! It will be Tuesday morning, June 27th at 10 am. It’s a hands-on practice workshop. You will leave with an outline along with tips and resource recommendations to help with your personal study.
So like the Bereans, you too can eagerly accept God’s message and be confident that what you see is true!
