For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. Philippians 1:10 (NLT)
For many of us, Christmas can be hectic. It’s full of long to-do lists: decorating, shopping for
‘perfect’ gifts, baking, entertaining; the list goes on – certainly not leaving room for the peace we
so desperately need!
Can we do what we want and still have that sense of peace? Yes! Here are a few practical ways
to prepare our hearts and homes for Christmas.
Do focus on what needs to be done versus what we think should get done. If we have time,
many things might be fun to do; however, if doing them steals our joy, then maybe they need to
be off the list, at least for this season. (For years, Christmas cards came off the list. They stressed
me out. I think I’ll add them back this year if time and bandwidth allow.)
Do give ourselves permission to make Christmas time special. We must ensure we don’t skip
or shorten our quiet time. Jesus is Who helps us keep everything in perspective. He’s the One
who gives us fresh ideas to make every conversation unique and every moment or event special.
Don’t succumb to the pressure to meet perceived expectations from others or ourselves. Set
appropriate boundaries and focus on pleasing Jesus. After all, He is the One we’re celebrating.
Do use your gifts. We aren’t all given the gift of hospitality, but we can be hospitable. If we’re
having people over, know they are more interested in spending time with us than in having a
gourmet meal or counting our dust bunnies!
Do reduce stress by planning ahead! Decorate early. Prepare food in advance. Keep an
appetizer in your pantry or fridge for last-minute get-togethers. Let friends and relatives help
with food.
Do dim the lights and remember candles are our friends – they hide dust, fragrance our
homes, and set a festive mood!
It’s not about having our home as decked out as our neighbors.
It’s about fellowship and celebrating Christ’s birth!
