We all love a good story. Good stories draw us in, entertain, and help us retain messages. Children are a great example of this premise. We have all had a child plead with us, “Tell me a story!” (and many times they want to hear it over and over again!).
Throughout Scripture, we see people sharing the story of God’s work in their lives. The apostle Paul never hesitated to share his story with whomever God placed in his path. Likewise, the Psalms are full of examples of God’s faithfulness to the authors.
In Psalm 40:1-3, David shares what God did for him:
“I waited patiently for the LORD to help me,
and He turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the pit of despair,
out of the mud and the mire.
He set my feet on solid ground
and steadied me as I walked along.
He has given me a new song to sing,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see what He has done and be amazed.
They will put their trust in the LORD.” (NLT)
David not only tells of what God did but also how it affected him. A new song was given to him — a hymn of praise to God.
As I was studying this passage, this phrase jumped out at me — “Many will see what He has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the LORD.” David’s story would impact others and bring them to trust in the LORD!
When we tell our stories of God’s work in our lives, we too can impact and draw others to the Lord. While some can question the authority or application of God’s Word, they can’t argue with what God has done for us. The Bible might seem to them just a book of ancient words, but our personal stories put a real face on God’s work and character.
Many times we may think our stories aren’t good enough or dramatic enough to share. But when we share even small things that the Lord has done for us, they can impact others in powerful ways.
In addition, when we begin to look at our lives with the expectation of seeing God’s work, our stories expand as we remember events in a new light. He is continually writing our stories, and we need to share them.
At our October 12th luncheon, you will hear three Knowing God Ministries team members share their stories. From spectacular to seemingly ordinary, you will see God’s work and faithfulness in their lives. Their stories will give you such hope for the people you may be praying for or possibly for yourself in you’re in a hard season.
We know that it can be hard to share your story, and we want to help! On October 25th, we are offering a hands-on workshop to help you learn how to discern and share your story.
It’s never too late to learn ways to tell your story more effectively. We are sure you will discover that your story has more worth and power than you ever imagined!
