“Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights. No one said a word to Job, for they saw that his suffering was too great for words.” Job 2:13
By: Melissa Bell
These words from the Book of Job simultaneously soothed my soul and pierced my heart.
I have experienced seasons of life when even the grandest gestures of love and encouragement by others couldn’t seep into the crevices of my weeping soul. My heart was crushed as I watched life unravel, and the only remedy was time with the Holy Spirit.
And while I can recall these times in my life as if they were just moments ago, I can have a hard time remembering that sometimes what others also need most during distress is my same remedy – sitting with God.
Maybe, like me, you are a fixer by nature and want everyone to live happily ever after. When disaster strikes, we swoop in, readily armed with Scriptures, words of encouragement, and a hot meal. We send text messages, make phone calls, offer to pray together – but all to no avail. Why can’t we break through the wall of sorrow? How do we love and support someone through such a season?
While we may not be able to sit with friends for seven days and nights, here are a few things we can do in my experience when others are hurting:
Pray.
When someone’s world is falling apart, the words “I’ll pray for you” may seem like an easy way out. But truth be told, when grief abounds, it is not always easy for the one hurting to know what to pray. Having someone stand in the gap and pray on that individual’s behalf is often needed and appreciated.
Send a Card.
When walking through grief, a phone call can be too much to bear. Receiving an encouraging note in the mail not only lets the recipient know they matter, but it can also be kept close at hand to revisit in a time of need.
Porch Drop-Off.
A visit can be overwhelming, but a quick porch drop-off can lift one’s spirits and take away the pressure of entertaining someone. Gather a few things, [balloons, flowers, snacks, candle, gift cards] and drop them off on the porch. Send a quick text to let them know you left a treat.
Whether you find yourself on the giving or receiving end of these actions, I pray that you will feel God’s presence wherever you go and the love of Jesus in every interaction.
