Nahum 1:7
“The Lord is good, a strong refuge when trouble comes.
He is close to those who trust in Him.”
These are dark days in our nation. And while it can be easy to find ourselves anxious, depressed, fearful or even losing hope, we must never forget that God does not want us to feel these ways.
Last week’s KGM virtual luncheon was an opportunity for me to share strategies that have helped me remain peaceful amongst the recent swirling chaos. Below is a summary of what I offered.
1. Spend time with God AND walk with God.
For the Christian, this is the most important part of our daily routines. When we miss our time with Him, we become spiritually anemic and weak in every aspect. But when we’re strong in spirit, we tap into the omnipotence of our almighty God and find daily strength for our needs.
Start your mornings well. Don’t let this very valuable time get crowded out. Fight for it. Nothing is more important.
2. Establish new habits.
I went to the doctor last week. The check-in and check-out procedures were completely different and involved a totally new routine.
In order to stay peaceful, we will need to do the same, establishing new routines and habits in our lives. A few practical ways we can do that include:
- Create boundaries with how much social media and news you absorb.
- Choose your friends wisely. Psalm 12:8: “The godly people in the land are my true heroes! I take pleasure in them!”
- Take your thoughts captive by memorizing Scripture. Replace stressful thoughts with what God’s Word says.
- Make time for exercise. It’s amazing what exercise does for your mind and perspective.
3. Be Eternal-Minded.
No matter our circumstances, we must remember that this world is not our home. The Bible tells us:
“They agreed that they were foreigners and nomads here on earth. Obviously, people who say such things are looking forward to a country they can call their own. But they were looking for a better place, a heavenly homeland. That is why God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.” Hebrews 11:13-16
To remain at peace, we cannot passively allow everything we hear, watch or read penetrate our hearts. We must practice discernment and plug into God’s power. In turn, we will begin to think differently and negative feelings will start to lose their grips.
