In a world where wrong is right and what’s right is considered wrong, it’s easy to blend in. To not make waves. To not speak up. To remain silent in the name of peace.
The same is also true as it relates to gospel issues such as creationism and the institutions of marriage and life. These subjects can elicit a range of thoughts and emotions and result in uncomfortable situations. It’s easy to passively ignore hard conversations God may be wanting us to have and become like the people we’re around.
But last week in my quiet time, this passage from Mark hit me like a ton of bricks. It’s caused me to ponder my behavior, especially my people-pleasing nature.
“If anyone is ashamed of Me and My message in these adulterous and sinful days, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when He returns in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:38
Very sobering. When it comes to taking a stand for Jesus and for gospel issues — even if we’re the only ones who believe at our place of work or in our families — may we not passively become like our surroundings out of fear of being different. May we not fear what others might think or worry about being labeled.
As I reflected on this passage, another that hangs on my kitchen wall came to mind. I walk by this Scripture multiple times a day.
“I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.” Romans 1:17
Just think, Jesus and His message are the power of God at work saving everyone who believes!
God may be drawing you into these uncomfortable conversations so that you can lovingly be a light-bearer in your corner of the world! Don’t lose sight that He wants us to be His hands and feet where we live. He also wants us to express His heart and His message.
What a high calling. And privilege.
So don’t be ashamed. Don’t shrink back. And don’t let the busyness or the uncomfortable cause your light to wane. Let’s be the light of Christ’s Presence wherever we do life!
