Three Changes to Make in Parenting Your Young Adult

“Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it.”

Proverbs 22:6 NLT

Dear Mom,

Congratulations, you have raised a strong and independent adult! All the years you have spent teaching, training, encouraging, and supporting have paid off, culminating in your son or daughter becoming a newly minted high school graduate.

One would think this occasion would be very happy, but as you may soon realize, it can be very difficult.

For 18 years, you have poured yourself into motherhood. But rest assured, it doesn’t stop here!

No matter the age of your children, they will always need and want their mama. It just looks a little different when parenting a young adult. Let me share some of the ways:

  • Life experiences will now be the teacher and the trainer, but your young adult will need to know you are still there to encourage and support.
  • Assuring confidence in them leaves the door of communication open. Be careful not to blurt your opinion. Only share when asked.
  • Fix your face. Remember you are your child’s safe place, so they will still come to you about life only if you don’t overreact or judge.

Keep in mind our children are only ours for a season. God has created them with a plan and a purpose, just as they are. Take all your worries and concerns to our Creator. After all, He is with them everywhere and in every stage of life. We just have to trust His plan.

Great Job Mom!

Love,

Mama Hath
