Blessed is the nation who’s God is the Lord.
Psalm 33:12
A few years ago, I had a unique opportunity to take a “Spiritual Heritage Tour” at the US Capitol. It moved me such in a way that I will never forget.
Standing in the Capitol’s rotunda and listening to the stories of our nation’s founding, my heart swelled with gratitude. I was blessed beyond words at what I learned. My hope was renewed that maybe our country’s current moral and spiritual spiral could be reversed IF our country turned back to God.
This week as we celebrate our nation’s founding, it seems appropriate to share some of what I learned during that tour.
- The Founders drew upon the Bible for many of the ideas found in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
- They created a constitutional republic so that the Bible would remain the plumb line of our society.
- They established a church within the United States Capitol before its construction was completed. The Capitol continued to be used as a church until after the Civil War.
I also learned that America’s Founding Fathers:
- were imperfect but feared God and had a deep reverence for His Word.
- regularly prayed and fasted.
- welcomed anyone of any religion but desired to establish America as a Christian nation.
- took time to remember all God had done on their behalves during the long days of establishing the Constitution.
- disagreed but found when they committed their meetings to prayer, God resolved their differences. (Imagine the difference that would make if our town council, school board or legislative bodies did this!)
Fast-forward to 2021, our nation more and more rejects the notion of ‘one nation under God.’ We’re being forced to embrace that which God calls vile. (Psalm 12:8) Evil is being called good. And what is good is being called evil. (Isaiah 5:20)
As we continue to celebrate the 4th of July, let’s pray for our country. God is the One true God over all the nations. “How awesome is the Lord Most High, the great King over all the earth.” (Psalm 47:2) He’s the only One who can bring healing to our nation.
Let’s thank Him for:
- The founding of our great nation and for allowing us to live in this very special country called America.
- The God-fearing men and women He has placed in authority.
- The many ways He has blessed us as a nation.
Let’s pray:
- For the awakening of God’s people.
- For protection from deception. (There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end, it leads to death. Proverbs 14:12)
- For repentance of any known sin in our own lives and turn to God.
- As a nation, we would turn back to the One, true living God who founded this great land.
- He would return to us, forgive our sin, and heal our land.
- He would raise courageously, bold people who fear Him above all others.
- His people would daily read and study His Word; live His Word; and speak His Word with great boldness. (Ephesians 6:19)
- We would be wise about what is good and innocent about what is evil. (Romans 16:19)
- He would use us to spread the knowledge of Christ everywhere, like a sweet perfume. (2 Corinthians 2:14)
For the Glory of the Great Name of Jesus. Amen.
