Proverbs 15:22,
“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”
When you consider the influential people in your life, who comes to mind? Who believed in you, saw your potential before you did, and encouraged you not to give up?
I can count on one hand the women who have been foundational to my growth spiritually, professionally and personally.
One of these women will be speaking at our luncheon Friday and I am thrilled to have her share with the KGM Community!
For years, Fayeson Tilley was my Teaching Leader in Bible Study Fellowship. Each week, she faithfully taught the Scriptures to over 500 women and discipled more than 50 + leaders. I not only had the privilege of serving under her fearless leadership, but she was also one of my first Bible teachers. Fayeson taught the Scriptures in a way that caused me to desperately want to know the Jesus she knew. Her relationship with Jesus was different, and I wanted it for myself. I remember praying after Bible study one night, “God I want to know You the way Fayeson knows You.”
As a result of Fayeson’s teaching, I learned truths from God’s Word I’d never before heard.
- To be totally and completely forgiven from past transgressions, all I had to do was come to the Cross, ask for forgiveness, and repent. Not only would I be forgiven, but I’d also be free of the guilt that comes from my past sin! (Could there be anything more glorious?!)
- Scriptures are not idle words written in antiquity, but words that are to be read, studied, revered, internalized, and lived out today.
- And maybe my personal favorite: that God would speak to me. Personally to me, through His Word! To even type this Truth brings tears at the thrill of knowing that the God of the Universe would want to speak to me. And He longs to speak to you too. (Next month’s luncheon topic!)
I also learned commitment to Christian service through her example and expectations. Fayeson taught me to show up and serve even when it wasn’t convenient. That our service to the Lord is often sacrificial. Serving Him would at times cost us something, but just as Mary anointed Jesus with the costly perfume prior to His crucifixion, our sacrificial service a gift to our Savior.
When I think about the birth of KGM, there are five women, whom if it was not for their influence in my life, KGM and all of its resources for women would not exist. I would have never had the courage to do what I’m doing now if not for Fayeson Tilley, one of those five women.
As for the women who have been influential in your life, take the time to share your appreciation. Write them a note of encouragement, and thank them for their ministry into your life. Call them. Take them to coffee or lunch. These women are a rarity and are gifts from Jesus.
