Women Need Each Other

Melissa Sue Bell, KGM Team Member

1 Thessalonians 5:11,
“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

The words I needed to hear at that moment were, “I remember those days. Your children will be just fine.”    Instead, the woman loudly spewed, “For God’s sake, put your phone away!”

Yikes!

For the first time in 18 years, I was by myself in a movie theater.  I was hoping the movie would distract me from micromanaging my daughter’s new-found freedom in driving.  She was excited for the opportunity to pick up her youngest brother and take him on a surprise date.

I tried not to panic as I envisioned her navigating unfamiliar roads with the distraction of a six-year-old’s constant chatter.  But I was a nervous wreck and anxious to check on them.

As the movie neared the end, I began glancing at my phone to make sure she wasn’t sending me a desperate message.  That’s when I heard a woman’s loud voice from behind saying, “For God’s sake, put your phone away!”

I felt the anger welling up inside.  I began planning a monologue that would ensue once the credits started rolling…

Fortunately, I did not let my anger get the best of me.  Instead of spewing the monologue I had rehearsed in my mind, I apologized after the movie for the distraction I had caused.

Although old enough to be my mom or possibly grandmother, this woman had no idea what I was going through at this moment.  Perhaps she had forgotten just how hard this phase of life was.  In another setting, this woman would most likely say, “Embrace the moments for they will be gone in the blink of an eye.”

Regardless of age, we all have life experiences we can share with each other.  Everyone needs encouragement and godly wisdom.

  • Teenagers need to be reminded that though these times may be tough, they will dim in comparison to the bright future that lies ahead.
  • New mamas need to hear that the sleepless nights won’t last forever.
  • Lonely women need encouragement to honor their husbands during the rough patches because their words carry more weight than those of the world.
  • A grieving widow needs a few good friends to help her discover happiness again.

Let me tell you how my movie theater story ended.  The woman and I crossed paths again in the lobby after the movie.  Through teary eyes, I apologized again and briefly explained my situation.  She smiled and responded with, “I’ve been there myself dear, it will get easier.”

If you allow Him, God can use you to speak life into those around you.
