“As for me, I will certainly not sin against the LORD by ending my prayers for you (Israel).”
1 Samuel 12:23 (Samuel was speaking to Israel.)
Last week we saw confirmation in Scripture that one person’s prayers can make a difference on a nation’s behalf. And that when it feels like things are spiraling out of control, we can always stand in the gap and pray for our country. In fact, one of the most powerful weapons we possess is prayer and committing to pray regularly for our country is one way we combat these evil forces.
Here are a few practical ways to pray Scripture over our nation. I hope you will join me.
- Pray for our national leaders and all in authority. (1 Timothy 2:1-4) Pray for our President and his family, our Vice President and her family, the Cabinet, and all those who serve as counselors and advisors. Surround our leaders with men and women who fear You and therefore have wisdom and sound judgment. When counsel is wrong, confuse it. When lies are spun as truth, reveal them. When personal agendas are placed over the public good, thwart them.
- Pray for the welfare of the city to which God has called you. Find out who your local representatives are and pray for them by name. (Jeremiah 29:7)
- Pray that leaders will know that their offices were granted to them by God. (Daniel 2:19-22)
- Pray that unrighteousness will be exposed in your leaders and that they would be removed if it is God’s will. (Psalm 5:10)
- Pray that corrupt leaders will see the evil of their ways and repent. (2 Peter 3:9)
- Pray that authorities will have a pure heart, good conscience, and faith in Christ. (1 Timothy 1:5-6)
- Pray for our judges and prosecutors. May they serve faithfully and wholeheartedly, adhering to the rule of law. May they remember that they are accountable to You. Punish the corrupt. Encourage those who do right. (2 Chronicles 19:8-11)
- Pray for just leaders to rule in the fear of the Lord. (2 Samuel 23:3)
- Pray that leaders will find wisdom and direction in God’s Word. (Proverbs 21:1)
- Pray that decisions will be made according to God’s truth. (Psalm 109:29)
- Pray for our country to rely on God. (Psalm 60:11-12)
- Pray that the God of our nation will be the Lord. (Psalm 33:12) Pray that our nation would be one nation under God.
- Pray that our nation will practice righteousness. (Proverbs 14:34)
- Pray for God to protect our nation. (Psalm 108:3-6, 11-13)
- Pray for revival in the Church and spiritual awakening in the nation. (2 Chronicles 7:14)
