“They have made it an empty wasteland (their nation);
The whole land is desolate, and no one even cares.”
Jeremiah 12:11 (NLT)
I have a confession. Sometimes I fail to pray because I doubt the difference one woman’s prayers can make in changing the trajectory of a nation.
But the truth is, my prayers matter.
And so do yours.
Look at what Scripture says about one person praying on his or her country’s behalf:
“…I searched for someone to stand in the gap …so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one. 31 So now I will pour out my fury on them, consuming them with the fire of my anger. I will heap on their heads the full penalty for all their sins. I, the Sovereign Lord, have spoken!” Ezekiel 22:30-31 (NLT)
God is searching for someone to stand in the gap… Here’s another:
“But Moses, His chosen one, stepped between the Lord and the people.
He begged him to turn from his anger and not destroy them.” Psalm 106:23 (NLT)
While it may feel like things are spiraling out of control, one thing we can always do is stand in the gap and pray for our nation.
Our prayers matter. In fact, the Bible says to not pray is a sin.
“As for me, I will certainly not sin against the Lord by ending my prayers for you (Israel).” 1 Samuel 12:23 (Samuel was speaking to Israel.)
Regardless of the candidates for whom we voted or our party affiliations, let’s ask God for His heart and His thoughts toward our country. We’re watching a war between good and evil, one where spiritual forces are at work to promote an agenda that is not of the Lord.
Our response as the Church is to be the light. To be the influencers and not the ones who are influenced. God has called us as Believers to stand and make a difference.
One of the most powerful weapons we possess is prayer and committing to pray regularly for our country is one way we combat these evil forces.
Next week I will share some practical ways we can pray Scripture over our nation.
