3 Actions to Guard Against the Strong Cultural Current

by | Jun 17, 2021 | Bible Reading, Spiritual Growth

“Be alert and of sober mind.
Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.
Resist him, standing firm in the faith…”
 1 Peter 5:8-9

As summer begins, the days are longer, and a new pace of life evolves. It’s easy to fall out of the habit of having our quiet times.

When we give up quiet time, we become sitting ducks for the lies and deception of the culture around us. The pull to conform to groupthink is subtle but ever so strong. We are living in a world that calls wrong, right and right, wrong.  The absence of a quiet time makes us more prone to ungodly influence and more apt to succumb to the sinful inclinations of our hearts.

The best way to guard against the strong current of culture is to spend time with Jesus daily.

  1. Read and meditate on His Word
  2. Pray
  3. Apply what He teaches us

Simply put, these three abiding actions are the key to the Christian life.

And as we learn to abide, He will renew and refresh our hearts and minds.

  • He’ll transform our minds, so we can know His will.
  • He’ll convict us when our thinking is wrong, and we’re going in the wrong direction.
  • He’ll enable us to hear the voice behind saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:21)
  • He’ll replace our fear and worry with peace and trust.
  • He’ll empower us in the dailiness of life to be His messenger and mouthpiece in a world that desperately needs Him.

An abiding life will bear much fruit against the backdrop of a broken world. We’ll have a beautiful, sweet aroma that exceeds even the most expensive perfume. Our lives will have a beauty that radiates His kindness, gentleness, goodness, and love. Through His Spirit, He’ll enable us to reveal the Father to those around us, speaking life giving words of encouragement. Whether the individual at the checkout, our colleagues, or most importantly, our families, they will be blessed by the fruit borne through us.

So as summer begins, remember to be on guard. Now, more than ever, we as believers need to immerse ourselves in God’s Word, pray, and apply what we are learning. If we don’t, we are giving Satan an opening to wreak spiritual and moral havoc in our lives.
