4 Responses of a Believer to Record Breaking Weather & Current Events

Psalm 135:5, 7,

“I know that the Lord is great… He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; He sends lightening with the rain and brings the wind from His storehouses.”

The news has been so heavy this past month.  We’ve experienced:

  • A total eclipse over America (in Jewish world, this is a sign…)
  • Record breaking storms:
    • Category 4 storm – Hurricane Harvey
    • Category 5 storm – Hurricane Irma
    • Three more storms:  TS Katia, Hurricane Jose (as of this writing, churning off the Atlantic coast and Hurricane Maria, now a Cat 5.)
  • Two earthquakes – an 8.1 and a 7.1 in Mexico
  • Record breaking wildfires covering the west coast
  • The imminent North Korea threat

ALL IN ONE MONTH!   Not to mention the chaos on our city streets and the post-truth  world we’re living in.   It’s unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed.

We have big problems.  No one but the Almighty God of the Universe is capable of helping us.   While He can help us, I’m not sure He’s as interested in our comfort as He is with the condition of our hearts.

In the midst of record-breaking environmental chaos,  social and political confusion and instability, I believe there are four responses for us, the church:

  1. To pray for our nation.  For His mercy upon our land; that He would forgive our sins (personally and corporately) and bring healing to our land.
  2. To turn to Him in a deep surrender of faith by adjusting our priorities and purposes.
    • Does God and family come first with you?
    • Have you ever asked God for His purpose for you during this season of life?
  3. To resolve to be pure privately as well as publically.
  4. To share truth with those who are far from God.

Practical ways to share with those who are far from God:

  • Be intentional in starting meaningful conversations at work, with friends and around the dinner table.
  • Connect with people you know in the affected areas.  Reach out to them with words of encouragement either through texts, emails or phone calls.  Ask how you can help.  Ask how you can pray. Tell them you’re thinking about them and care for them.
  • Pray for ways to be the hands and feet of Christ in your corner of the world.  You may not live in the affected areas, but the way you serve others (starting in your home) reveals Jesus to those who need Him.

God is speaking.   And it’s loud.   Are we listening?

He wants us to turn to Him, serve Him and show Him to those around us.   One day Jesus will return.  If His return were today, would He find you faithful?    Many of the things happening in the world around us signal His coming could be sooner than we think.  (Matthew 24; Joel 1)

Pay attention.  Be mindful.  Live intentionally.
