5 Questions to Get You Started on Your New Year’s Resolutions

“For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return.” Philippians 1:9-10

What are we longing for in the New Year? Is it to bring Jesus more glory? To be bolder for Christ? Or is our hope aligned with the world’s hopes – and we’re seeking comfort and ease? The status quo? A safe little bubble to live in? Or attention (glory) for ourselves?

As we read in Proverbs, if our desires are aligned with the worlds’ desires, they will come to nothing. “The righteousness of the upright delivers them, but the unfaithful are trapped by evil desires.” (Prov. 11:6).

If our expectations are based on seeking to glorify Him and His kingdom, we won’t be disappointed. “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” (2 Kings 6:16).

How might we apply the Word to making some spiritual resolutions this year?

Since we know this world is not our home, let’s think about making some changes in the New Year that will have eternal significance. We can call these our spiritual resolutions or our faith goals.

Ask God what gift(s) you can give Him in the upcoming year. Start by asking for the Holy Spirit’s help, reading the Bible, and maybe confirming with a wise friend.

We might want to consider a specific verse or passage that God has used to speak to us. Some people like a ‘word of the year’ to guide them.

A few questions to get us going:

  1. How has God specifically gifted me? What am I better at than others? What is something that makes time fly by when I do it? How can I better use this skill/talent/gift for His glory?
  2. Is there a specific Bible verse (phrase/word) that He’s leading me to ponder and live by?
  3. Inventory our habits. Is there a bad habit (sin) I need to repent of?
  4. What can I do in my current situation to make it better? What next step can I take?
  5. Do I need an accountability partner for this? A prayer partner?

Let’s come up with at least one spiritual resolution (or gift to Jesus) that will draw us closer to Him.
