Are You Anxious About the Future? How To Find Direction in Life’s Pivotal Moments

One morning, while walking and talking with the Lord on the paths at the NC Art Museum, I was specifically praying for His direction. I was asking Him to make my next steps clear. A little while later, I came upon this fork in the path.

I actually laughed out loud as I took a picture to remember this moment with God.

The word “NO” with the big “X” stood out first, but as I reflected on the picture later, I noticed that the brighter path, with another person and friendly dog, was the path that had the “NO”.   It was the darker less traveled path (on the right) that seemed to be the one beckoning to me.

New adventures and milestones in life often come with joy, celebration, and anticipation, but they can also come with questions, concerns, and uncertainty.

It’s natural to want to skip the difficult stage and the unknowns for clarity and assurance of what our next steps will be and how we will get there. It can feel safer to follow the path that is already being traveled.

“You have your heads in your Bibles constantly because you think you’ll find eternal life there. But you miss the forest for the trees. These Scriptures are all about me! And here I am, standing right before you, and you aren’t willing to receive from me the life you say you want.” John 5:39-40 (MSG)

Why can’t God’s voice and the direction He desires for us be as clear as this answer I found on this path?

What if we just need to open the scriptures, ask God some questions, and then sit and listen quietly for His answer? Could it be that easy?

I remember when our kids were small, and we took a bike ride through the NC State campus. My husband and I explained to our children that this was where we met and began dating. They asked so many questions.

“What did you do on your dates?”

“Did you have sleepovers?”

“What movies did you watch?”

They asked question after question to find out more about us. Our answers revealed a side they had not seen or thought about before. It intrigued them. Our Heavenly Father wants His children to ask Him questions too.

He wants us to dive into His Word, His past, promises, and character so that He can reveal to us who He is and all He desires for us. He wants to answer our questions, speak to our hearts, and give us direction, courage, and clarity to follow Him.

Are we so busy talking to God about our problems, desires, and needs that we forget to just sit and listen?

Will you join me in sitting with God this week, maybe even asking Him question after question about Himself and waiting for His response? He might even make you laugh.

Will God Give You More Than You Can Handle?
