The Long Game: Staying Faithful in a Chaotic World

by | Aug 3, 2024 | Trusting God

“Don’t envy sinners but always continue to fear the Lord. You will be rewarded for this; your hope will not be disappointed.

Proverbs 23:17-18

When we’re trying desperately not to conform to the patterns of this world, it can be challenging to remember why we chose to serve Jesus in the first place.

In moments of suffering, persecution, or when our motives and way of life are misunderstood by others, it’s crucial to think long term – or play what I like to call “the long game.” The long game means we know with great confidence and remember that there’s GREAT REWARD for serving the Lord.

During such times, we must remind ourselves of what the Bible says about the rich rewards awaiting us in heaven. This perspective helps us stay focused and faithful, knowing that our efforts and sacrifices are not in vain but rather part of a greater eternal purpose.

  • But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded. (2 Chronicles 15:4)
  • Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth… But store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. (Matthew 6:19, 20)
  • God rewards those who sincerely seek Him. (Hebrews 11:6)
  • We have a priceless inheritance – an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond reach of change and decay … so be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead. (1 Peter 1:4-6)

So dear friend and sister, run the race! Our service to God is not in vain.

  • Focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead. I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus is calling us. (Philippians 3:13-14)
  • [In the midst of deep suffering], you accepted it with joy. You knew there were better things waiting for you that will last forever. So do not throw away this confident trust in the Lord. Remember the great reward it brings you! (Hebrews 10:34-35)
  • But even if you suffer for doing what is right, God will reward you for it. (1 Peter 3:14)
  • They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted, and mistreated – the world was not worthy of them … God had planned something better. (Hebrews 37, 38, 40)

No one said walking by faith in 2024 would be easy. That’s why it’s essential to have the support of like-minded believers in our lives. And why we must make staying closely connected to Jesus a priority by reading and studying our Bibles daily. When we do these things, we have the courage and passion needed to play the long game! So don’t give up. Keep pressing on!
