Where We Put a Period, God Puts a Comma

by | Jan 11, 2024 | Trusting God

“The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days He has shown His favor
and taken away my disgrace among the people.”
Luke 1:25

Before reading the end of Zechariah and Elizabeth’s life story, one could easily think: This couple was all but forgotten by God. But the years they longed for a child only lasted a season. It was not the end of their story. Their life story ends by God blessing them beyond what they ever could have asked or thought.

If you are facing trials, hardships or discouragement, then I pray Elizabeth and Zechariah’s story will encourage you. During hard seasons of life, it’s easy to think: This is the way it’s always going to be. But we must remember: We’re living in a comma, not a period. Life is not over until our final breath.

Perhaps your hardship is financial,
or something in your marriage,
or a family relationship that is strained.
Perhaps a career related trial;
or a huge disappointment that can never be erased.

If you’re still breathing, it’s just a comma in God’s eyes, not a period.

Psalm 37:28 tells us, “For the Lord loves the just and will not forsake His faithful ones.” God is faithful to the faithful.

What must we do while living in the comma? Psalm 37:3-7 has an answer for us:

“Trust in the Lord and do good….
Take delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this:
He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
your vindication like the noonday sun.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.”

Our sweet couple was righteous in the Lord’s eyes. The world’s definition of righteous is subjective. The only way we can know what is good in God’s eyes is to be in the Word each day. Trust in the Lord and do good, my friend! God is faithful and limitless. He is still writing your life story!
