Proverbs 31:30,
“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but the woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
The beauty industry was valued at $532 billion in 2017 and shows no signs of slowing. In fact, it’s growing at a rate faster than ever before and is expected to reach more than $800 billion by 2023.[1]
That fact alone makes me turn the mirror on myself and ask the question – how much time and money do I spend on such things? I think I might be embarrassed by my answer.
From the brand of makeup to my hair color appointment that I never miss…from the electrolysis to remove unwanted facial hair to my time spent on exercise…I’m keenly aware of the money, time, and effort I expend to look and feel younger.
So as not to make anyone feel guilty, I can’t find anything in the Bible that tells we shouldn’t get our hair colored or unwanted facial hair zapped away!
But I can find Scriptures that reiterate outward beauty is not to be my sole focus.
Proverbs 31:30 reminds us “…beauty is fleeting (don’t we know it!); but the woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.”
1 Peter 3:3-4 tells us our “beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.”
How do we develop this inner beauty Peter speaks of? I’d offer a few practical ideas:
-
Develop a personal relationship with Jesus by studying the Bible and prayer. (Knowing God Bible study is a great tool.)
-
Look for ways God is at work in your circumstances. (Especially in answer to prayer. This will grow your faith.)
-
Seek friendships with other women who know and love Him.
-
Attend a good Bible-teaching church on a regular basis.
-
Serve Him by helping others with the gifts and talents He’s given you.
-
Go to women’s events where you can be spiritually fed and meet other like-minded women. (Example: ONE WOMAN Conference and our Luncheons)
So back to our original question. How much time do you spend each day on outer beauty versus inner beauty?
No matter how much time, effort and money is spent to look and feel younger, the sad reality is this: our wrinkles will eventually win, our triceps will sag, and no matter how many core exercises we do, that stubborn belly fat will acquiesce to the aging bodies it lives in.
But the wonderful news is one thing is certain. While outward beauty fades, inner beauty lasts forever. So invest time and energy in developing inner beauty, acquiring a radiance that will never diminish.
“Those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.” (Psalm 34:5)

We’re excited that Shari Braendel, Founder of Fashion Meets Faith, will join us at this year’s ONE WOMAN. A highly sought-after speaker, Shari is a TON OF FUN! She strikes a wonderful balance between helping women feel more confident (i.e., which colors and styles look best on them) while not losing sight of the priority focus of inner beauty.
