“God-devotion makes a country strong;
God-avoidance leaves people weak.” Proverbs 14:34 (MSG)
Have you ever thought about the idea that long before our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence on that fateful July 4th day in 1776, God knew that the United States of America would rise?
God is the Creator of all the nations.
“From one man He created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and He determined their boundaries.” Acts 17:26 (NLT)
Of all the presidents, prime ministers or kings, God is exalted over all nations and every leader.
“For God is the King over all the earth…God reigns above the nations, sitting on His holy throne. …For all the kings of the earth belong to God.” Psalm 47:7-9 (NLT)
God also determined that you and I would live in this generation.
“His purpose was for the nations [and for each individual person living in those nations] to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him—though He is not far from any one of us.” Acts 17:27(NLT)
And what makes a nation strong?
“God-devotion makes a country strong…” Proverbs 14:34 (MSG)
The inverse is also true; a nation is made weak through its avoidance of God and division within.
“God-avoidance leaves people weak.” Proverbs 14:34 (MSG)
“A kingdom divided by civil war will collapse.” Mark 3:24 (NLT)
Some nations stand out in God’s eyes above all others.
“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord… Psalm 33:12
“I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse. Genesis 12:3
God’s promise to the those who are good to the nation of Israel. So how we, as a nation and a people treat the nation of Israel, matters to God.”
The cure for a nation’s restoration is clear.
“If my people, who are called by My name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7 :14
“The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” James 5:16
You may have read a few weeks about the display that took place before an NHL playoff game when New York Islanders’ fans spontaneously sang the Star-Spangled Banner together. Nicole Raviv, who had been asked to sing the national anthem that evening, humbly put her microphone down shortly after she began as the voices of 14,000 fans filled the arena in unison. It was organic and moving as you watched fans unified under the ideals that formed this great land.
As you celebrate our nation’s independence this holiday, consider what might happen if we built upon the display that evening and began to pray together in unison? United under the belief that we’re desperate for a move of God and for the wind of Spirit to blow through our nation…
