Nehemiah 1:3,
“The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”
In Biblical times, a city’s wall represented security, safety and strength. King, Nebuchadnezzer utterly destroyed Jerusalem’s wall during his siege in 586BC. 142 years later, the wall’s destruction left the citizens who had returned from exile, feeling vulnerable and insecure to attack. When Nehemiah heard, he was devastated. Although he did not know how, he knew something had to be done.
The wall of a city remind me of the “wall” of a marriage. Areas of brokenness or hurt can damage the wall brick by brick. Until finally, if left unattended, the wall simply crumbles. Over a period of time it may seem impossible to rebuild. The walls of trust, confidence and friendship compromised.
But rebuilding can happen.
In Nehemiah’s case, God used his leadership in a big way and ultimately the wall of Jerusalem was rebuilt in 52 days! Nehemiah shows us the power of ONE person with a God-given vision – anything is possible.
Desire to rebuild didn’t just happen. It started with a God-given vision. A clear mental picture of what could be; fueled by a conviction that it should be.
Do you have a conviction for the way things could be or should be in your marriage or family? Do you have a determination to have strong walls in your home?
Strong marriages and families do not happen by accident.
- It takes work and effort on an ongoing basis. Even when it seems easy, continual maintenance is necessary.
- It takes having a vision for the way you want your marriage to be year; 5 years; 10 years from now.
- It requires fervent prayer.
- It requires dreaming and asking God what His dreams are for your family.
- It requires never giving up on His dream and vision for your family.
- It requires perseverance in prayer even when it seems an answer is never going to come.
- It requires planning and strategizing. (Which by the way, God’s Word provides the blue print. I’ve chronicled it in The 7 Day Challenge.
Are you single mom whose ex-husband is not willing to help repair the wall of your home? Be encouraged – God wants your wall to be strong. The greatest thing you can do in this situation is to make your relationship with God the priority of your life. Brick by brick – He will help you rebuild the walls of your heart. He will repair the broken places. He’ll heal the areas that have been burned. And if it’s His will, He’ll bring a perfect match to you. So don’t accept just anyone. Wait for God’s best!
For the married woman – could the walls of your home become stronger and more fortified because you’re willing work and ask God for His vision for your home/marriage?
God wants to use you to play a big role for His great purposes, just as He did in Nehemiah. The great work starts within the walls of your home. Regardless, of where your husband is in the work, someone has to go first. The more mature one should goes first.:) An entire nation was impacted because Nehemiah went first.
With God + ONE WOMAN = anything is possible!
