2 Thessalonians 3:10
When we were with you, we gave you this rule: “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.”
Last Tuesday, at Hope Community, our speaker, Gwen Brodd, engaged a room full of hungry moms seeking guidance and wisdom in parenting.
We learned powerful truths of what a parent is responsible for:
- It is our job to raise our children to know and love Jesus.
- It is our job to pray for them.
- It is our job to provide for what they need and only a little of what they may want – NEVER what they demand.
It is also our responsibility to raise children to become responsible adults. Gwen was super helpful by giving us practical suggestions, based upon Biblical truths based around one little simple secret.
The secret?!
CHORES!
Giving children chores helps develop work ethic, personal responsibility and respect for authority. It also gives them life skills such as doing their own laundry and cooking for themselves – skills they will desperately need when they leave home.
Interesting to note, Gwen shared a national survey conducted of the 1000 participants. It is reported that 82% of parents regularly did chores as children—including, cooking, cleaning, dishes and laundry. But only 28% of those parents require their own children to do chores.
Are you one of those moms? I know I can be. Sometimes its just easier to do it myself. However when I do this, I’m robbing my children of many benefits.
Genesis 2:8, “Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east…” Gwen noted, God didn’t speak the garden into existence as He had everything else. God planted it Himself.
God intends for people to work – to not be lazy or idle. Therefore, the garden we call home, needs to be a training ground for teaching our children to work.
Will they want to do chores? NO! But they must do them anyway!
The benefit of chores:
- chores make our children feel secure
- chores give them a sense of accomplishment
- chores bond a child to family values
- chores bring greater self-esteem
- chores help our children to be “givers” to the family instead of “takers”
- chores help our children to eventually be better citizens.

It was a great night! I praise Jesus for allowing KGM to be an organization bringing Biblical value to a woman’s everyday life!
Comment from a guest as seen on Facebook:
Attended my first KGM event about raising responsible children! Wow, I’m officially a fan of KGM!! It was awesome, amazing and worth the time away from my precious family. I took a book of notes and can’t wait to start implementing what I learned. Thank you for coming to my second home, #hopecommunitychurch, and engaging women! Melissa R.
Another great event, bringing value to your everyday life…
